The weekend’s concerts will be hosted by WNYC’s John Schaefer and are slated to unveil new works by six contemporary composers including Robert Xavier Rodriguez, Joan La Barbara, Mason Bates, Charles Wuorinen, Young People’s Chorus composer-in-residence Michael Gordon and even Young People’s Chorus alumna, Jessie Montgomery.

Among the six new works by the aforementioned composers to be premiered at the YPC concerts with by Rodriguez’s A Surfeit of Similes, Gordon’s Great Trees of New York City and La Barbara’s A Murmuration for Chibok.

The Young People’s Chorus of New York City was founded in 1988 by artistic director Francisco J. Núñez, a composer, conductor and MacArthur “Genius Grant” Fellow. Per a YPC press release for the upcoming events, as reported by ChoralNet, Núñez described his ongoing artistic contributions to the musical world of choral performance:

“Mr. Núñez created Transient Glory as a platform for today’s important composers — those who write major orchestral works, operas, and chamber music — to write for children’s chorus because, Mr. Núñez says, ‘I wanted to inspire today’s Mozarts and Beethovens to write masterworks for the 21st- century children’s chorus, with subjects that would appeal to the young minds of today.'”

Tickets for Friday’s YPC performance at National Sawdust are $35 and may be obtained by calling (646) 779-8455 or visiting www.nationalsawdust.org/calendar.
